Cats to Bigger Cats to California - Apple"s OS Naming Scheme

As some of my friends will know, I have been a solid Macintosh computer user since about July of 1990. As I explain in my overview on this page . . .

http://www.armageddonbbs.com

. . . that is when I was first introduced to computing -- and to a Macintosh SE in particular -- while working as an office manager at a local business. Thanks Sally! You got me hooked on Macs! :)

macintosh-lc-iii Behold! My Macintosh LC III computer.

It wasn"t until about three years later that I was finally able to purchase my very first personal computer -- a Macintosh LC III, pictured above. You can learn more about it at the above URL. It was also during that same year -- 1993 -- that I first learned about BBSing and the online world, and I jumped right into it with enthusiasm, via BBSing.

Well, a long time has passed between then and now, and we Macintosh users have gone from OS 6 to OS 7 to OS 8 to OS 9 using 68k and PPC architecture with Motorola chipsets, to a long stream of Mac OS X releases which rely on a Unix-based system and Intel chips.

However, you can still enjoy both worlds if you run an emulator such as SheepShaver or Basilisk II. Again, please refer to the above URL for more details.

At any rate, let me tell you; at my age, when you are dealing with so many different iterations of Mac OS X, and trying to keep straight in your head which software packages are compatible with which versions of Mac OS X, it can become downright confusing. You"ll have all kinds of cats running through your head!

So for the sake of restoring your sanity, as well as my own, allow me to share with you the following list which correlates Mac OS X version numbers with their more commonly known corresponding name designations. I snagged this information from somewhere on the Internet. I don"t remember where now.
